The Guestbook: our interview with Ivory Shots

Ivory Shots is the name of Lyon based artist who creates portraits characterized by a style that prefers the use of color and enhances the aesthetic peculiarities of each subject immortalized. Ivory represents that generation of artists who have been influenced by contemporary portrait painters such as Alessio Albi.

Us at Collater.al have asked Ivory a few questions:

Tell me about your first memory about photography

My first memory was at Christmas, when I was about 12 years old. My aunt gave a camera to my mum and my mum let me use it as she already had one. It was a white Pentax K-m and I really wanted to know how it worked. I never thought that I’d be so interested in photography years later.

Is there a particular reason why you selected these photographs?

These photographs aren’t actually mine, but they are pictures that make me think “wow”, “oh my god”, “how?” Or “I want to reach this level”.

There is a picture, among those you’ve taken, that represents you more?

The black and white photograph of the girl with freckles represents what I like most about photography: creating an emotion. She explained to me that most girls who have freckles don’t like them because when they were children, they usually got laughed at by other kids.

I love people who are different and I love to create a real connection because I’m more inspired when I know the models’ background. For this one I remember that I told her I would make sure that she loves her freckles from now on.

 What inspires you?

When I go somewhere, I always look around me to see if I can imagine a picture in the place that I’m in. A year ago, I found a sunflower field when I was on my way back home from a swimming pool with my friends I instantly knew that I would like to do a shoot with this place.

What advice would you give to those who have recently approached photography?

They need to progress step by step! Before I was too impatient and I didn’t realize that some projects need skills that I didn’t have. If they want to enjoy photography, they need to start with little projects and evolve step by step.

Oh and they need to share their passion with others because there is always someone who knows something about a potential opportunity for us!
