John Anthony restaurant is located in Hong Kong and is named after John Anthony, the first man born in China as a British national in 1805. Anthony worked for the East India Company in London and his task was to provide food and accommodation to Chinese sailors. arriving. The Shanghai architecture and design studio Linehouse found in this story the source of inspiration for his project:
“The design drew on John Anthony’s journey, exploring the fusion of architectural styles and materiality between east and west as well as colonial architecture blurred with eastern detailing, to create a British tea hall turned Chinese canteen”.
The studio meticulously researched all the materials Anthony met on his journeys such as hand-glazed tiles, natural and drawn inlays, terracotta and various types of fabrics. The encounter between English and Chinese culture becomes a natural and harmonious process; the main dining room with a vaulted ceiling has the aim of reinterpreting the warehouses of the port areas of London, moreover the floor is composed of terracotta tiles recovered from abandoned houses in rural China.
The restaurant is also equipped with a private dining room, where you can admire hand-printed tiles with large-scale illustrations of goods exchanged between English and Chinese in the 18th century, such as medicinal poppies and exotic animals. To give added value to the project there is also the fact that the whole structure has been designed with an attitude to sustainability: menus and glasses are made of recycled and plastic and paper, the floor tiles are recovered and the materials are of environmentally sustainable origin.
