To celebrate 80 years of history of the “Estadio municipal Paulo Machado Carvalho”, the French artist JR has covered the entire grandstand with one of his amazing artwork.

Built with art deco style in the 1930s and inaugurated in the 1940s, the historic stadium hosted several nations at the 1950 World Cup.
Since 2014, right after the World Cup was held in Brazil, no club plays matches there anymore. But being a true landmark, it has never been demolished or abandoned.

For several years, it was the home of Corinthians, which, however, packed up to move to its modern stadium. But still today some matches of the Sao Paulo state championship, the highest soccer league in Brazil, are played inside.

JR used 1,480 strips of paper to cover the iconic grandstand with the piercing gaze of a young resident of a distinctly Brazilian community.

The artwork, like JR’s others, has as its underlying theme dignity and respect for others, especially those who are disadvantaged or overlooked.
