The Reflecting Mirror of Kimsooja in Paris

-

Le monde comme il va is the exhibition at the Bourse De Commerce in Paris where the South Korean artist Kimsooja presents To Breathe – Constellation. The artwork appears as an extended mirror on the ground that, as one approaches, alters the surrounding architecture by Tadao Ando, as if drawing the sky beneath our feet. In addition to this, Kimsooja expands her artistic vision through 24 showcases in the Passage section and the lower level of the museum, exhibiting works and video installations that explore recurring themes such as identity, boundaries, memory, exile, movement, and weaving.

Kimsooja in Paris

Kimsooja’s approach is metaphorical, leaving room for the body and an almost imperceptible anonymous entity. In her art, stillness and upright posture are nothing but a symbolic needle piercing the fabric of the world. In harmony with Tadao Ando‘s philosophy – in search of an architecture of emptiness and limitlessness – Kimsooja covers the floor of the Rotunda with a reflective mirror.

In this way, Kimsooja elevates the artwork beyond mere objectivity, turning it into an essential experiential journey. The artist transforms architecture into what seems to us like a parallel world, recreating a reversal of reality where the sky under the glass dome appears to sink into a vast abyss. This change in perception alters our understanding of space and challenges our sense of gravity.
