Today, 13 January, Mark Flood‘s exhibition opens in Milan. Flood is an artist who for decades has been going sideways in the narrow lanes of the contemporary art market, with critical works in different formats, playing with the meaning of identity and ownership, as well as with visitors’ expectations.
Born in Houston in 1957, Flood has over the years staged performances against the perception of art, for instance by sending stand-ins in his place during performances, or by writing fake press releases.
With his art, Mark Flood mocks society and the tendency to create slogans, in which advertising becomes a tool to be ridiculed or, if necessary, made dark through text and images. This same mass culture is then first destroyed by the artist, who then picks up the pieces by reassembling a new and unexpected idea.

The Milanese exhibition is hosted by Spazio Maiocchi until 20 January and is the result of a collaboration between the artist and 1017 ALYX 9SM, which will present its FW 23 collection on Friday 13 during Milan Fashion Week.
The show will not only be the setting for the fashion show, but the entire show and collection have been created in synergy between Matthew Williams – founder of ALYX – and Mark Flood. The garments and accessories on the catwalk will unite the talents of two creative minds who have in common that they have had the ability to reinterpret certain codes, stopping at the border for a second and then looking at it and taking a long step beyond it.
