Mary Pilas’ Photography Goes Beyond Spanish Religious Tradition

Semana Santa in Spain is a very crucial moment, and the project by photographer Mary Pilas was born precisely from this suspended rhythm. After experiencing it for the first time between Seville and Málaga, the photographer felt the need to return again, more recently moving to Salamanca and León. Her series is a personal crossing that makes room for moments in which the full force of this unique time emerges—an in-between space that seems to go even beyond religious sentiment.

Scrolling through her images in chronological order, just as they were taken, you can sense a continuous movement—a true visual diary that follows the slow step of the processions and the quicker pace of the tourists. She stops in front of a detail, sets off again behind a group of nazarenos, and finds a balance between the solemnity of the ritual and the everyday life of the streets. Mary Pilas’ photography always moves along this boundary: it recounts what happens, but above all, what takes place between one scene and the next.

In her images there is not only religious tradition, but also everything that surrounds it. The faces of those who wait, the cloaks moving in the wind, the silences that thicken before the procession begins again. There is the glow of candles, but also the life that continues along the edges, in the alleys, in the details that usually go unnoticed. It’s as if Pilas finds a way to give Semana Santa an intimate dimension, despite the grandeur of the ritual.

Following the rhythm of the days, from the first shot to the last, the series becomes a journey. Not the story of the event itself, but of how it is lived. A simple and direct way to remind us that photography can still be a space of observation, presence, and attention. And Mary Pilas, with her discreet and sharp photographic gaze, proves it in every image of this Semana Santa.
