Micaiah Carter is a Brooklyn based fashion photographer who tells the black community through his shots on street life. His portfolio includes numerous fashion editorials for such names as New York Times, Brooklyn Museum, Vogue, Time Magazine, Vulture and the new Nike campaign for Kendrick Lamar’s shoe, Cortez Kenny IV. The artist tells:
“I really want my photography to be a quality platform for representation of people of color that hasn’t
been seen before”.
His gift is to bring out the personality of the subjects he portrays, whether they are celebrities, models, musicians or ordinary people. His style is narrative and incorporates visual elements in a disco style of the ’70s that can be found in his new photo book entitled 95 48: 95 is the date of birth of the artist, while 48 is that of his father. We find ourselves faced with two generations in comparison, where their photos are joined to those of his father in the ’70s, at the height of the revolutionary movement Black Power.
This interesting matching operation enhances the work of Micaiah, which becomes an occasion for reflection on the present.
