Andrea Crespi’s New Mural Unveiled

For the past few weeks we have been following artist Andrea Crespi on his trip to South America, specifically to San Salvador. Here the artist took part in an urban regeneration project with CMS Foundation, working on the gigantic wall of a building in a working-class neighbourhood. After a long work in synergy with some local operators, the work is finally ready. In Crespi’s classic style of illusory lines to simultaneously reveal and conceal a message in the form of writing or images, the mural takes shape in the colours of peace. The curved lines hold the figure of a dove taking flight, offering the neighbourhood a symbol of hope. We met up with him to get some background and the reason for this subject.

Why did you choose this subject and these colours?

Andrea Crespi: «I chose this subject because the dove, in a universal way, symbolises peace and hope. The city of San Salvador, particularly this neighbourhood, is coming out of a great period of social difficulty, including crime and violence. This work for me stems from the desire to enshrine a new beginning for the neighbourhood and its inhabitants. The colours – always linked to a connection with messages of peace and liveliness – become here a language that can be understood by everyone, so that the work can speak to anyone, which for me is what public art should always do.»

What was it like working in this area? What were the challenges you faced?

Andrea Crespi: «The biggest challenges were two. On the one hand the size of the work and on the other the weather conditions. Being in the rainy season, we had to deal with sudden downpours that slowed down the process, but fortunately we managed to deal with them and bring the work to completion.»

Why is it important for you to work on public spaces that everyone can see, and why do you always choose these areas with difficult situations?

Andrea Crespi: «This area in particular is very complicated. Until a few years ago there was a death every three hours or so. I must say that today the context has improved a lot, we have been welcomed with a lot of enthusiasm and supported by the local people. Art and creativity enrich the world, making the role of the artist fundamental in reflecting and shaping our society.»
