Nos Primavera Sound 2017 – Saudade, Saltiness and Sound System

When I came back from Porto, it took me two days to recover. The traffic, the asphyxiating heat and all those features that make Rome an – ok beautiful but – invivibile place, left me in a catatonic state in which, if I’d closed my eyes and my ears I would see azulejos, hear beautiful music, the Ocean’s wind would make my hair always messy and, miraculously, there was an unremovable smile on my face. Yes, Porto is a city of which – and in which – is extremely easy to fall in love, no matter of what or who.

But, now that I’m on my way to feel better, the point is that I was there for the Nos Primavera Sound and – also about this – there’s nothing to complain about.

DAY 1

After I had eaten a Francesinha and got the necessary calories to survive for the rest of my journey, I moved towards Matosinhos, that area of Porto facing the Ocean where Parque da Cidade is, the location of our Nos.

Let’s start from here, an huge park that seems to be invented to play live music in it: wherever you stand the acoustics was almost perfect.

I hurry up suddenly towards the main stage because I hear the unmistakable sound of Cigarettes After Sex. For now there are a few people around, the sun has just arrived after a cloudy day and Greg Gonzalez’s voice cuddles both ears and soul.

The last notes and a moment of hesitation due to the dryness of my mouth and the resulting need for beer that I forgot till now just because I needed music so much more.

With a big glass in my hand I move to the other stage – the Super Bock, to stay on the topic – where Rodrigo Leao & Scott Matthew with congeniality and skills make people smile, even those who don’t know who they are.

At the end of the live many people start feeling their empty stomachs and the raised Market reveals itself as a very nice place with a lot of choices both typical and international. In a few words, not the usual festival-sandwich without a soul.

Meanwhile, on the main stage, Miguel has started his concert and, even If it’s not my kind, the sunset and the beer running in my veins manage to make me feel involved. The sun sets and all the people around me are smiling: it’s impossible to stay cold and aside.

Everyone knows that Arab Strap have the know-how and they lead us perfectly in the night-time ending their set with “The First Big Weekend” that seduces even the ones who don’t have still get them.

Everyone starts running towards the main stage attracted by the anthem “We Run the Jewels, my friend”. The incitement is in the air and the live of the American hip-hop duo goes up and up: it’s impossible to stay quiet.

There’s no time to catch my breath because at the Super Bock Flying Lotus is starting his set confirming himself as “the Master of visuals”: he’s hidden under projections that make you wander even if there wasn’t music, but the music is there so everything is simply perfect. Now the place is very crowded and the choice of the little stage is not the best. Dancing is quite complicated but maybe this is an advantage because I need to recover some mineral salts lost during the RTJ’s live.

We are now at the end of the first day and everyone is waiting for Justice, the french electro duo with a passion for crosses. From the attack (ndr “Safe and Sound”) the public go into raptures. You cannot buy class: the light design, the insistent and perfect rhythm and the stage presence make everyone involved in a beautiful final with the only black mark that is still 2 o’clock and no one wants to come back home (also because of the long queue in front of the Uber Lounge).

DAY 2

After I had put the right amount of Porto in my empty stomach and I was arrived at the gates a little bit dizzy, I suddenly understood 3 things: 1. I had lost First Breath After Coma’s set; 2. It’s hotter than yesterday; 3. There’s a lot of people today and they keep on coming in!

I point to the main stage where the Australians Pond are playing their songs: they share components and melodies with the Tame Impala, their much more known “soul brothers”. They manage to make me feel happy in a two songs-time and I see that my feeling is shared.

Jumping on my feet I head to the Super Bock where there are the Whitney and all their sweetness. Julien Ehrlich – in the middle of their show – confesses to the public that his grandfather has come to pass a few days before: the tenderness we already felt goes to Level 1000 and I feel as I’m in a collective hug.

Still a little bit dazed and confused by the tender emotions I’m not used to, I come back to the main stage where Angel Olsen is ready to guide the sunset with her mellow but gritty voice. She wears a green dress that matches perfectly with the green light that make her look like a fairy with a lot of sex appeal. A sunset even better that the day before.

From the new small stage on the hill, meanwhile, I can hear the angry verses of Sleaford Mods and I follow them to change rhythm and mood for a while.

Now it’s time for difficult choices, I abandon the idea of getting some food (also because of the kilometric queues) and decide not to go listening to Swans – reluctantly – because I already heard them before and I hope I will catch them again somewhere/someday.

Meanwhile, in front of the main stage everyone is waiting for Bon Iver. I finally understand how many people are in the park today. I manage – don’t ask (because I don’t know) how – to fight my way through the crowd till I get in the 8th – more or less – row. I have a strong technique for this but the credit goes to Portuguese people that are the most relaxed people on earth. Obviously I cried (just a tear of two), maybe because of the strong lights (just kidding), with the final song (guess which!) in acoustic.

Always more and more dazed and confused by both emotion and crowd, I decide to move to the Pitchfork stage to reflect a little bit on the most difficult choice of the Festival. When I arrive there everyone is waiting for Hamilton Leithauser to play “1000 times”.

At the end, I decide to miss King Gizzard & The Lizard hoping to catch them again soon and I come back to the main stage for the coolest guy on earth – in every way – Mr Nicolas Jaar. A brave show, maybe not appreciated so much by the public that – especially at that time of the night – would like to dance, but we know that Jaar isn’t easy and we love him exactly in this way.

It’s 30 past 2 and everyone is moving towards the Pitchfork, the most dancing stage that will bring us safe and sound till the dawn. Richie Hawtin goes very heavy on his set and Mano Le Tough follow his example. Tired, with an upcoming headache, but HAPPY, I go towards the exits while the sun starts shining and I really want to die in my bed and resurrect for a beautiful last day.

DAY 3

Today is even hotter than yesterday and I have a discrete amount of wine in my body. I haven’t slept that much because Porto deserved another walk and the other side of the Douro was still unexplored.

So I arrive at Parque da Cidade later than the other days, around 9 p.m., and I stop in front of the Pitchfork stage to hear the guitar of Mitski, the umpteenth super-woman of this line-up that – finally – has given a lot of space to women.

I go up the hill to recharge myself with Death Grips that don’t disappoint me: powerful with their odd but perfect mix of noise and rap.

I stay only for the first 3 songs because on the main stage everything is ready for Metronomy and I don’t wanna lose them for any reason.

Aesthetic as hell and with an enviable and captivating rhythm, they make people dance and sing from the first till the last song. Not only “The Bay” but every fucking song, I swear.

At the last note I decide to listen Japandroids without moving from there, sitting on the grass while waiting for Aphex Twin.

A Master, no much else to say. On the screens the faces of the public start to appear deformed in the Aphex’s way, then they’re replaced by strange girls in bikini and the faces of Portuguese politicians – as I supposed because of the public’s reactions. Then the set become heavier and heavier till everyone is dancing and the stupefying effects are more and more visible on the faces of the people all around me. At the end, Aphex reaches the audience. Perfect.

Everyone moves to the Pitchfork stage where Tycho has to begin his set shortly. I’m overturned by emotions for all the possible reasons and this is one of the set I was craving for.

An unmatched class, perfection from the very beginning till the end, the best projections of the festival (among which, diamond-point, “The Holy Mountain” of Jodorowsky). A true trip, one of those you can remember after years and smile.

Bicep and Marc Piñol close the festival keeping the level high – even if they cannot exceed Tycho – and the morning comes grey and beautiful.

Seagulls have swarmed Parque da Cidade and I overreach the Ocean guided by the flocks. The line between the sky and the sea is invisibile, water and air seems to be the same thing as the joy of these beautiful days and the sadness I’m feeling now that they’ve come to an end. A few photos inspired by Ghirri but not even a tear: the smile keeps on resisting upon my face with the awareness that everything comes to an end but luckily there are comebacks.
