Yesterday, 13 July, the nominations were announced for the 2021 Emmys, which will be held on 19 September live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
Instead of reporting the usual long list with all the nominations (easily downloadable from the official Emmys website), we decided to focus on a category dear to us that is part of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
The Emmy Awards are perhaps the most important award in American television and are divided into several classes. The most famous is the Primetime Emmy Awards (the one we usually refer to when talking about Emmys) which includes the most important awards, then there are the Daytime Emmy Awards and the Sports Emmy Awards. For each of these classes there are the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which are the awards for those categories and professions that work behind the scenes such as producers, cinematographers, costume designers, special effects people and many others.
Since 1997, one of the categories of the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards has been “Outstanding Commercial“. We closely follow the commercials that brands, together with creative and advertising agencies, are committed to creating and increasingly we notice how these short videos are conceived as real short films with the aim, not only to sell a product, but to talk about different lifestyles and universal values.
The six commercials nominated for the 2021 Emmys do just that. Released between 1 June 2020 and 31 May 2021, the selected commercials manage to blend the brand’s philosophy with what’s happening in the world. The videos tell universal stories and needs, sometimes seriously as in You Love Me by Beats narrated by Dr. Dre, sometimes ironically and lightly as in Alexa’s Body with Micheal B. Jordan and sometimes with passion and strength as in You Can’t Stop Us by Nike.
