German artist Simon Schubert creates complex images of stately homes and mansions by folding simple sheets of white paper.
The folds create reliefs of a few millimeters, they capture the light from different angles to create detailed images of architectural spaces, playing with a flat three-dimensionality.
Loneliness, isolation, loss and disappearance are recurring themes in his works. The icy atmosphere, mysterious and disturbing like a Herzog film, places the viewer in front of his unconscious anxieties and fears. Stairs and corridors always seem on the verge of dissolving. The rooms as if inhabited by hidden figures.
Ghosts among white shadows.
