Ezgi Polat is a photographer based in Berlin who created the Picturesque project, whose name refers to the fact that the images look almost like paintings. The artist explains that:

“My idea behind this series is to create a connection between painting and photography. There has always been one, a complicated one. So my thought was to show how much we actually can benefit from another. Painters can use photography as an inspiration and vice versa”.

In the past, in the nineteenth century, photography has found a place next to the painting and since then a controversial relationship has been created; painters often felt threatened by this form of art. The new technology made it possible to produce much cheaper and more realistic images than paintings. Subsequently, with the affirmation of the pictorial photographic movement, it was possible to reconcile the two practices.

In the portraits made by the artist, it is evident how this competition between the two art forms can also be an input for creativity.
