American artist Sasha Trubetskoy has transformed the roads of the Roman Empire, dating back to 125 AD, into subway lines.

Taking a step back in time, we remind you that the Roman Empire extended in 53 of the 196 recognized states. Practically on three different continents.

Creating it took a lot more research than I expected, there isn’t a single consistent source that was particularly reliable.

Making a subway like this would be surreal and undoubtedly almost impossible. But Sasha Trubetskoy after careful research has reconnected and joined the dots, creating a map almost faithful to the ancient possessions of the empire.
