It’s called the Sacha Chair, born from an idea by Philippe Malouin for the New Zealand design studio Resident. A completely upholstered piece resulting from extensive discussions between Malouin and the company. We often talk about chairs, and this one—monochromatic and upholstered—seems like the perfect one to delve deeper into the topic of seating. Today, we do so through the eyes of Philippe Malouin with his Sacha Chair.

Simple, geometric design—perfectly in line with Malouin’s work—that also brings with it the ability to distinguish this seat from the perspective of comfort and functionality. The key lies in the use of covered plywood, foam, and steel, allowing this chair a comfort designed for long periods of sitting.

In designing this chair, Malouin thought of those who want a designer chair to accompany them through long dinners, something the designer himself loves, as we read on design milk. It is precisely in this vein, rather than working with wood—the preferred material of Malouin—that we find ourselves facing a chair that, thanks to a fabric covering (from head to toe), becomes a functional seat on many occasions. The designer’s objective was also to create a piece capable of lasting over the years, away from today’s fleeting design trends.
