For London Design Week, Sam Jacob and his architectural studio presented an installation that aims to raise public awareness of the effects of the massive use of plastic on the seas and oceans. Hanging at the entrance of the Victoria and Albert Museum, Sea Things dominates the heads of visitors who, looking up, will be captured by an enormous cube on which an animation that traces the history of plastic is continuously projected.
The video begins in 1907 when the bakelite was first synthesized and ends in 2050, designated by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation as the year in which the volume of plastic in the seas will exceed that of all marine animals.
With the installation Sea Things, the Sam Jacob Studio also presented a series of 8 vases. There are seven reproductions of ceramic vases in the V&A Museum collection but made of recycled plastic, bio-plastic or alternative materials. The latter, on the other hand, reproduces a classic plastic bottle in ceramic.
