Can we imagine what art will look like in the Metaverse? What will be the new formats or which of the traditional art formats will be adapted to a new digital version, to be experienced only through visors, changing the feeling of encountering art itself? Experiments are already underway, even for the one of the arts that seems to us to be most closely linked to a materiality and a real spatial presence such as sculpture.
Among the artists who are trying to imagine a “future sculpture” is Jaewon Kang, an artist who uses an approach based on the physical experience of inflatable sculptures, reproposed with 3D modelling tools within rendered landscapes.

Starting from the works of the South Korean sculptor, one can imagine what sculpture will look like in the metaverse. One of the greatest challenges is to design sculptures that fit into unthinkable landscapes, nestled between mountains or frozen lunar plains.
Jaewon Kang’s stylistic approach consists in deliberately forcing the concept of distortion of forms, creating abstract volumes that look like the inflatable models of the artist’s parents’ factory, the place where his interest in those forms began.
Starting from 3D models and distorting them allows Kang not to remain anchored to any form of realism, but to accept the challenge of finding what could be the new aesthetic canon of the metaverse. In this new reality, the surfaces of the sculptures will no longer be the veined marbles of Canova, but rather mirrors that will reflect and multiply reality even more. One of the forms of digital sculpture could be the combination of Jeff Koons and the coldness of Philippe Starck, it is certain to reflect new light.
