Guanyu Xu is an emerging talent in photography who has recently received several awards for his project Temporarily Censored Home, which the artist himself described as such:

“In Temporarily Censored Home, I secretly placed photographs in my teenage home in Beijing to question the normativity of my parents’ heterosexual space. These images taken in the last four years consist of portraits of me and other gay men in their home environments”.

It is an intimate and public project at the same time, which includes: the One Land To Another project, prints of works of art made in the United States, landscape and environment photographs made in the United States, Europe and China and, finally, pages torn from film and fashion magazines mixed with images of family photo albums.

The power of his artistic gesture is underlined by Guanyu himself, who explains its meaning in detail:

“Through the positioning and stratification of the images, I propose to juxtapose, contradict and collapse space and time, destroying my adolescent home. The images fill the relationship between the personal and the political in the context of the oppressive systems of China and the United States. Although these installations were not permanent, I claimed my Beijing home as a queer space of freedom and temporary protest”.
