Valentin Fougeray maps the journey of love through an artist’s book

De l’amour à la mort is the first artist’s book by Valentin Fougeray, a project that brings together abstract photography and textual fragments to tell the different stages of a relationship. There is no traditional narrative intent: the volume builds a visual and emotional journey that follows the evolution of a bond, from its beginning to its final transformation.

The images work with color, light and blurred textures that do not illustrate situations, but instead convey inner states. Each shot avoids direct description and focuses on perception, allowing the reader to project their own experiences. The texts appear in short phrases, sometimes just a single line, that set the rhythm of the book and create a constant tension between what is seen and what is felt.

The volume is introduced by a foreword by Ysé Sorel, which places the project within the field of contemporary visual practices oriented towards sensoriality. This is a central aspect of Fougeray’s work, already evident in previous projects such as Chantal, where the study of color became a way of addressing themes related to memory and its fragility.

One of the most distinctive elements of the book is its physical construction. Each page features a perforation that makes it possible to open the back, revealing the continuity of the images and texts. The object thus becomes part of the experience, inviting the reader to interact and choose how to move through it. The form of the book does not only accompany the content: it expands it.
