Working with vintage photographs of artists, musicians and politicians, Mexican textile artist Victoria Villasana applies a layer of colour to black and white, faded and ruined images.

After studying design at ITESO University in Mexico, she spent more than ten years in London, where she became famous in the urban art community for her sharp, strong and rebellious female images.
Her works often depict feminist icons, from singer Nina Simone to artist Frida Kahlo.

The dynamism of her work derives from the way in which the thread is allowed to hang far below the frame, giving a surrealist aesthetic that is reflected in the acceptance of imperfection and its transience.
