We’re in New York, the city that never sleeps, and it’s here that Zach Buchner, in the spring of 2025, set out to capture the Knicks playoffs at Madison Square Garden. Buchner, a photographer and assistant director raised in New York, decided to tell those days through his lens, armed with a flash and a documentary instinct. The result is a series of undeniably striking (and a little bit bizarre) shots. Let’s take a look.

Zach Buchner’s photos capture scenes of chaos and celebration that spilled into the streets just steps from the arena: fans blocking traffic, collective chants turning the night into a party, and fleeting moments when the city seemed to breathe in unison. Each Knicks victory became an hour of pure euphoria, before everything dissolved as if nothing had happened—only to repeat itself a few nights later.

Buchner’s project is a visual testament to how sport can bring people from all backgrounds together, creating instant, fleeting communities. For him, born and raised on New York TV sets, it’s not just about taking photographs: it’s a way to preserve the storytelling tradition his family has carried on for three generations. His experience in television and advertising production has taken him around the world, but this series is a return to his roots—a visceral bond with his city.

In Zach’s images there’s the noise, the confusion, and the excitement of a historic moment for New York, distilled into snapshots that show how rare and precious it is to see the city vibrate so intensely.
