Originally Halloween was born as a Celtic festivity, but after arriving in the United States, where it took over the commercial aspect, became known throughout the world. For some years now it has also taken root in our culture, and on the evening of October 31st, it became customary to dress up as witches, vampires or ghosts, carve out pumpkins and watch horror or scary movies.
The world of cinema has decided to make films exclusively for this festivity, but not everyone can enjoy them. However, there are as many movies in which the protagonists run into theme parties or which are set just in the days between the end of October and the beginning of November, and in these cases, it is impossible not to dedicate at least one scene to Halloween. We tell you about the most iconic costumes that appear in movies and TV series and that, despite the passage of time, we keep loving.
We can’t help but mention Mean Girls (2004) and the unforgettable Halloween party scene. The main character, Cady Heron, played by Lindsay Lohan, comes to the party disguised as a bride/vampire, without knowing that for the rest of her companions, including Regina George’s notorious Barbie, the party is the perfect opportunity to dress up as a “total slut“.
Sex and the City: The Movie
Halloween had to reach even the most famous single in New York, even if Carrie doesn’t seem to be in the right mood, will she have just seen the article on Vogue? In any case, as a true friend she is, she decides to help Miranda to find the perfect costume, which is more difficult than it seems.
“Witch and sexy kitten. That’s it. The only two choices for women, witch and sexy kitten?”
But it doesn’t end there, because in the original version a scene has been cut, which you can see below, in which Carrie helps Charlotte, her husband, and little Lily to do “Trick or Treat” for the building.
Let’s move on to a film that immediately brings us back to childhood, Casper. The scene of the Halloween party is emblematic above all because we see the little ghost regain its human appearance to dance with Kat, played by a very young Christina Ricci. However, when, at ten o’clock, the spell fades and he returns to be the ghost of all time, the rest of the guests are not at all indifferent and a little Buh! is enough to make them run away terrified.
E.T. – The Extra-Terrestrial
The famous pumpkin festivity could not escape to Steven Spielberg who has masterfully used it in E.T., creating one of the funniest scenes of the film. For the little extra-terrestrial he thought of the most classic of costumes, that is, the ghost costume. Do you remember what happens when you meet a character dressed as Yoda?
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
Although it began as a pagan holiday, Halloween has become so popular that it is also celebrated in Hogwarts. Harry, Ron the Gryffindor and the other three houses are ready, the Great Hall is decorated with hundreds of pumpkins suspended in the air, the table is set, but, wait, where is Hermione? And what is happening? A troll in the dungeons?
Moving on to the small screen, let’s start with something that surely all of you have seen, Friends. In the sixth episode of the eighth season “The Halloween Party“, we see the six friends indulging in the most unusual costumes. Ok, it’s true, Rachel doesn’t dress up, but she has a good reason not to because she is a woman who spent a lot of money on a dress and she wants to wear it, because soon she won’t be able to fit into it.
In any case, Monica’s Cat Woman and Phoebe’s Super Girl costumes are unforgettable, as are Chandler’s giant pink rabbit and Ross’ weird one. But, I think we’ll all agree that Joey, disguised as Chandler, is the best costume.
How I Met Your Mother
We stay in New York and always among a group of friends, but a few years later Friends. In episode eight of season seven of How I Met Your Mother, “The Slutty Pumpkin Returns” we see one disguise stranger than the other. Proud of her Canadian roots, Robin wears an ice-hockey suit, while the eccentric Barney is fierce at showing off his version of Uncle Sam with a mega entry effect. At the party, they meet Ted, dressed as a ballot paper, accompanied by the episode’s guest star, Katie Holmes, the super sexy pumpkin he had met ten years earlier.
The Big Bang Theory
We always stay among a group of friends, but this time on the West Coast. Sheldon, Leonard, Howard and Raj, the most famous nerds on TV, are no strangers to disguises and costume parties. Every occasion is perfect for dressing up as their favorite heroes, but what happens when everyone has the same idea? Maybe they could walk right behind each other all night and look like one person going really fast.
This Is Us
From the comedy genre, we move to the most moving drama. The Pearson family is almost unbeatable when it comes to costumes and, although Halloween is a party to entertain children, the costumes that we liked most are those of parents, Rebecca and Jack, because in the end “What is Cher without her Sonny?” Between so many tears This Is Us‘ creators have also managed to give us a moment of healthy fun.
Last but not least, Stranger Things, besides being in perfect Halloween style, also offers fantastic costumes. The four friends Finn, Dustin, Lucas, and Will, in line with their roles, decide to dress as Ghostbusters, you never know that instead of a ghost they manage to capture a Demogorgon. Meanwhile, we also follow Nancy and Steve to the Halloween party, where Charlie doesn’t seem to be entirely at ease.
