Between pandemics, political upheavals, climate change, struggles and protests, we seem to sail into uncharted territory every day, but this is not the case. History repeats itself, and Getty Images, one of the largest online providers of high-definition stock images, is proving it these days. Its latest campaign is entitled “History Repeats” and shows how past and present are linked in a surprising way.

Developed by the advertising agency Havas Germania, “History Repeats” combines current and previously unseen images with well-known photographs from the past and unites them in visual and thematic correspondences.
The Spanish flu of 1918 accompanies the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020. Images of the struggles in London for women’s suffrage in 1906 interface with those of the Femen demonstrations in Paris in 2018. The 1970 Stonewall riots in New York join Pride in California in 2019. And finally, the ship carrying some Jewish refugees in 1948 complements that which landed in Italy in 2017.

This ingenious advertising campaign not only demonstrates how the experiences we have today are mirrored by those of so many other people from other places and other times, but it also allows Getty Images to increase the value of its brand.
“History Repeats” raises awareness of the fact that Getty Images, as well as being one of the leaders in its field, also has a huge historical archive of images dating back to the early days of photography.
