For the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, on November 25, IKEA Italy is launching “The Red Flag Tag”—a campaign created by the creative agency DDB Group Italy. Developed in collaboration with the association Differenza Donna, the initiative aims to raise awareness about recognizing early signs of gender-based violence and to promote the anti-violence and anti-stalking helpline 1522.

A Creative Idea for an Urgent Issue

DDB Group Italy has transformed one of IKEA’s iconic elements—the classic P-Tags—into tools for awareness. Instead of the usual product names, these tags feature phrases that represent signs of psychological abuse, such as intimidation, devaluation, isolation, or control. Additionally, the shelf numbers have been replaced with 15 and 22 to reference the national helpline.

The campaign, displayed in IKEA stores from November 22 to 25, includes a special installation in Milan Corsico and Rome locations. These spaces feature products exclusively in white, symbolizing the often invisible nature of different forms of violence.

ATM Milan: A Complementary Message

ATM Milan has also joined the awareness campaign with an initiative titled “Giving Women the Means to Fight Violence”, designed by Child The Agency. Graphics displayed at bus stops and metro stations emphasize the importance of recognizing signs of abuse, concluding with a clear call to action: “Call 1522.”

The Power of Communication for Change

Thanks to the work of DDB Group Italy, IKEA Italy demonstrates how design and creativity can become tools for addressing critical social issues. These initiatives, together with ATM Milan’s campaign, underline the importance of combining efforts to combat violence against women and educate the public. Recognizing violence is the first step toward stopping it.
