Kristina Rozhkova‘s photographs (1996, Russia) flirt with the viewer’s feelings of discomfort and disgust. In particular, the project titled Deep Latch better explains this concept. «I like it when the image becomes almost physically unbearable,» explains Rozhkova, who makes the contrast between aggression and tenderness the red thread of her project. Her imagery is raw and extremely real. The use of a strong flash is often present in her shots, contributing to enhancing the “horrifying” details that Rozhkova seeks. Hers is a true sensory exploration that the photographer lives firsthand and then returns to the viewer. The destabilizing effect of her shots constantly engages with fragility, revealing intimate and everyday aspects that manage to create an empathetic connection with the viewer. On one hand, repelled, on the other, embraced. A macabre dance capable of caressing with sweetness.
