Lachlan Turczan’s works of light, water and sound

Lachlan Turczan is an American artist who works with three fundamental elements: light, water, and sound. Over the past decade, he has developed an artistic practice that explores the optical and sonic properties of water, creating immersive installations that challenge human perception. His work merges technology with natural phenomena, giving life to unique sensory experiences that capture the essence of fluidity and transformation.

Who is Lachlan Turczan?

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Turczan has always had a strong interest in both science and art. Throughout his career, he has experimented with sound visualization and the interaction between light and water, leading projects that have made a mark on the international art scene.

One of his most significant works is the Wavespace series, a water projection system that immerses viewers in a bath of reflected light, creating a dreamlike and immersive experience. Turczan has exhibited his works in museums, experimental film festivals, and design fairs worldwide, demonstrating how art can transform natural elements into tools for sensory exploration.

Touching light at Milano Design Week

Italian audiences had the opportunity to admire Turczan’s work during Milan Design Week 2023, when he presented The Shape of Water in collaboration with Google and Ivy Ross. The installation explored the relationship between water, light, and perception, creating an experience that questioned the boundary between the tangible and the intangible.

In just one week, Turczan will return to Milan Design Week 2025 as part of Google’s exhibition Making the Invisible Visible with a new monumental installation titled Lucida (I-VI). This installation promises to be an immersive experience where dynamically shaped columns of light will redefine space, transforming the perception of luminous matter.

One of the central pieces of this exhibition will be Light Object (2025), an artwork that combines lasers, water, acrylic, sensors, and software to explore how light can take on a physical presence. The piece behaves like a fluid, responsive, and tangible material, distilling elements of Turczan’s outdoor installations—where artificial light interacts with natural landscapes—into a controlled studio environment.

To achieve this vision, the artist and his team have developed custom optics capable of controlling the light beam with extreme precision, preventing diffusion and creating well-defined luminous forms. The result will be an environment where light takes on a tangible presence, transforming the exhibition space into a living artwork.

Turczan’s installations do more than manipulate perception—they seek to make the invisible visible, transforming light, water, and sound into tools for poetic and sensory exploration. Milan Design Week 2025 will be an unmissable opportunity to discover the next chapter of his extraordinary career.
