Lote Vilma is an illustrator and poet from Riga who uses simple, light and instinctive lines to show her world view and emotional attitude. Her drawings are concise, free of excessive detail, spontaneous and colourful.
“I like how abstract drawing is. I like the fact that through drawing I can discover my inner world. I like that one doesn’t need much to draw – a pencil and a paper. Or sand and a finger. Or a foggy window. I’m interested in the quality of lines. I like that with one line one can express so much. I think that drawing is quite an intimate occupation. And it is something real. It’s a language.”

Lote Vilma studied painting at the Latvian Academy of Art and now draws and writes. Her creations mix words and images, and it is this particular interaction that creates a special tension in her works. Her illustrations tell of simple everyday moments of isolation, reflection, contact with nature and art. Her subjects never fail to include animals, plants, flowers, leaves, clouds and houses.
