Megaliths in the Bath House Ruins, the teamLab installation

On the Japanese island of Kyushu, inside Mifuneyama Rakuen Park, in conjunction with their exhibition “A Forest where Gods Live, Ruins and Heritage“, teamLab creatives transformed an abandoned bathroom into an unprecedented immersive installation. The work entitled Megaliths in the Bath House Ruins features huge megalith-like blocks coming out of the floor and occupying most of the room’s space.

This abandoned place is a sort of time machine, a space in which nothing has changed for years, and it is with time the protagonist of the installation.

Whole life cycles of flowers are projected on each megalith, from when they bloom to when they lose their petals and die, but thanks to a computer program the images are neither pre-recorded nor in loops, but they change according to the quantity and movements of the spectators, so as to offer a unique and unrepeatable experience. For example, if a person moves between the megaliths the flowering process will be slower, while if a spectator stops in front of one of them the process will be much faster.

But flowers are not the only subject, another type of projection involves an infinite cascade of drops of water that, again, according to the movements of people slows down or accelerates its flow.

“Every moment is unique and can never be seen again.”

What makes the installation Megaliths in the Bath House Ruins even more evocative is the soundtrack that can be heard in the background, signed by Hideaki Takahashi.

Megaliths in the Bath House Ruins will be open to the public until November 4
