Glimpses of American cities and moments of everyday life are Nigel Van Wieck‘s favourite subjects, and he has been immortalising them in his paintings for decades.
Born in Kent in 1949, Nigel Van Wieck is an English artist who now lives and works in New York. It is the landscape of the United States that has attracted his attention and become his primary source of inspiration.
Nigel began his artistic career exploring and analysing light through the processing and use of neon and only later transferred his knowledge of the subject to his paintings. 

In the scenes he paints, in fact, we notice a particular attention and care for the areas of light and shadow that become functional to the narrative. The atmospheres of his works are always melancholic and the subjects are often lonely people, waiting for something that will never come or simply immersed in their thoughts. 

It is impossible to look at Nigel Van Wieck’s paintings and not think of one of the greatest painters of the last century, Edward Hopper. It is precisely his style and the themes he addressed in his art that Nigel refers to, rightfully becoming his worthy heir.
The only difference, of course, is that Nigel Van Wieck depicts scenes from the present day, so we see a boy skateboarding, a woman sitting in an underground wearing a mask or a man waiting for the underground while looking at his mobile phone.
