Over the past few days, the Saint-Tropez lighthouse has become a work of art thanks to the skilful work of Miguel Chevalier.
Born in Mexico City and now based in Paris, Miguel Chevalier has always created works of art combining architecture, lighting and digital technology, as he demonstrated with the Magic Carpet in Bangkok or the Digital Supernova installation.
On the occasion of the fourth edition of Saint-Tropez Couleur Bleu, an event that aims to raise public awareness about the protection of the oceans and that each year invites an artist to turn the lighthouse of the famous French resort into the poster of the initiative, the artist created the work entitled Coraux Fractals.
In order not to directly affect the structure, Miguel worked on a canvas covering the exterior surface of the lighthouse, allowing the artist to print some parts of the artwork and paint others by hand. A fluorescent paint was used for the latter, so that the artwork is visible both during the day and at night.
As you can guess from the name Coraux Fractals, this kind of mural represents different types of coral and is intended as a tribute to marine flora. Not everyone knows that coral reefs occupy only 1% of the earth’s surface, yet they are home to 25% of marine species, which is why they must be preserved and people must be made aware of their importance.
In addition, in conjunction with Coraux Fractals, the Fondation Linda et Guy Pieters in Saint-Tropez will host the exhibition Corauxllages 2021 until 4 November, where visitors can admire new works by the artist including 3D printed sculptures and laser-cut compositions, which always explore the theme of the oceans and marine biodiversity.
Once again Miguel Chevalier reminds us how important it is to create a balance with nature and learn to live with it without changing it.
