Niels Koopmans, born in 1982 in Groningen, Netherlands, is a photographer who explores loneliness and individuality within urban settings. After studying film theory and spending years immersed in music, Koopmans turned to photography, merging his theoretical knowledge with visual imagery. His project walk alone in the crowd, the centerpiece of his work, investigates the theme of solitude within the crowd, seeking the individual at the heart of the metropolis.

Raised in the peaceful north of the Netherlands and now residing in Amsterdam, Koopmans reflects on the contrast between the calm of his childhood and the urban chaos. His visual exploration is nothing more than an attempt to find tranquility in crowded cities, seeking moments of solitude through the lens of his camera. Koopmans’ photographic style is characterized by a play of light and shadow. His references include Rembrandt and filmmaker David Lynch, as well as photographer Saul Leiter, known for his use of reflections and textures. «Light is the starting point for me,»he says. Although sunlight is rare in the Netherlands, Koopmans manages to take advantage of artificial light during the nighttime to create high-contrast images.

Koopmans’ influences extend beyond photography. Filmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni and painter Edward Hopper both have a significant impact on his work. Antonioni inspires him with his search for abstraction in the ordinary, while Hopper fascinates him with the solitude he captures in his paintings.

Koopmans aims to stimulate interaction with his audience through his images. The use of silhouettes leaves room for interpretation, allowing viewers to build their own narrative. «I like the viewer to be challenged to interpret,» he explains, and this approach is exemplified in his photos, which, through layers, reflections, and textures, create a visual “puzzle” effect.

Through his work, Koopmans explores solitude amidst urban crowds, searching for individuality and serenity even in the busiest of places, inviting the viewer to reflect and see beyond the superficial.
