On March 27, local authorities announced a second phase of lockdown for Shanghai and its 26 million inhabitants. Nine weeks later, on June 1st, the city reopened.
Photographer Nicoco throughout these weeks chose to chronicle what she saw from her home. A small mirror on the world that nevertheless encompassed and well described the essence of a metropolis like Shanghai. The documentary approach is the same as the first series made by the artist and focused on the 2020 lockdown, published on Collater.al magazine two years ago.
The shots are a chronological journey culminating in newfound freedom and the barriers giving way to open streets and street banquets. Through the change of context immortalized in Nicoco’s photographs, the effects of a social change that has also affected Europe but to a different degree than in China are told. The candid look of the photo-documentary series is a way to unify judgment and experience on an event that was perhaps the first major phenomenon of the globalized world.
