Steve McQueen is about to come back to cinema with a brand new film called Widows. This movie is the fourth opera by the British director. Lets now review his past works.
His first film was Hunger. It’s the account of the hunger strike of the political IRA prisoner Bobby Sands, interpreted by the great Micheal Fassbender. It’s based on true facts, and the film is actually pretty raw. McQueen chose to outline facts with the extensive use of long shots to enter the jail to relate the protagonist’s pain. This movie by winning the Camera d’Or prize at Cannes Festival put McQueen under the international spotlight.
The second work of our director is Shame. Here too we shall admire a great interpretation by Fassbender albeit in a totally different role: the self- introspection of a sex addict striving to overcome his life’s lack of love. The movie, very tender and human, though crude, brought a new prize to Micheal Fassbender as best actor at Venice film festival.
The third film marks a significant change in the director’s career.
In fact, 12 Years a slave, is a major production showing a completely different direction style from McQueen’s previous movies. It’s an American historical event: the slave trade, set in the US and cast by great American actors. The story takes place at the beginning of the 19 century and the protagonist is Chiwetel Ejiofor who plays the part of a free black guy who is captured and turned slave. The movie is totally different from McQueen’s previous directions not only for its management and production but also for its plot. In fact, the film is really dynamic, full of dialogues and occurrences. 12 Years Slave won the 2013 best movie Oscar.
Now a new film by McQueen is coming out.
The title is Widows and it is set in Chicago where four women (wives of assassins) decide to change their lives by devising the perfect robbery. The cast is incredible, in fact, we will see actors such as Elizabeth Debicki, Colin Farrell, Liam Neeson, Viola Davis and other Hollywood stars. Widows is the adaptation of a British tv show from 80’s, written by and directed by McQueen and it will be coming out on the 9th of November.
