By switching your phone’s keyboard, you can make small drawings or rebuses with emoji, which express concepts more directly than words do. There are tutorials to combine emoticons and achieve small artwork, sometimes it is more complicated, as in the case of the works of Jun Jake or the video “Timeline” by French artist Hiérophante.
The artist’s video project began by experimenting with emoji for eight months, thanks also to the support of a programmer friend. Together they developed an app capable of classifying symbols by color and not by subject area, as they are displayed on the phone.
Hiérophante then began posting experiments on Twitter, small portions that joined together to form moving images. In “Timeline,” initially the emoji create simple, then increasingly complex, animations that have as their theme an irreverent critique of Trump and the most ridiculous moments of his campaign as President of the United States.
