On Tuesday morning, while Donald Trump was preparing to speak at the UN in New York, a statue appeared on the lawn of Washington’s National Mall depicting him hand in hand with Jeffrey Epstein. The work, titled Best Friends Forever, shows the two balancing on one leg, smiling, in a dance that to us appears pathetic.

Despite having a permit through Sunday, the statue was removed yesterday morning by the National Park Service and the U.S. Park Police because it was “not compliant” with the terms of the concession. Does this ring a bell?

Behind the installation is the collective The Secret Handshake, a small group of citizens who in recent months have already staged other protest actions against the former president. After the monument Dictator Approved — a hand crushing the Statue of Liberty’s crown while giving a thumbs-up — and the Gold TV Statue with gilded images of Trump dancing, including with Epstein, the group claimed this third action, ironically dedicated to Friendship Month.

The collective explained that it wants to use art, irony, and humor to spark political debate in public space. At the base of the sculpture, in addition to the plaque celebrating the “enduring friendship” between Trump and Epstein, there were also quotations from a purported greeting card that Trump is said to have written to the financier in 2003, surrounded by the outline of a nude female body.
