On Sunday, May 4, a 70-meter-long Colosseum made of 250 shipping containers appeared in the port of Naples — and was dismantled just 48 hours later. Inside, there were no gladiators, but rather the Coppa Pizzeria: the most absurd soccer tournament on the planet. Born in Berlin in 2011 from the imagination of artist Daniele Sigalot (and previously featured here), the tournament is played 2 vs. 2, with absurd rules, biased referees, and masked players. The result? A collective carnival — a performance blending sport, art, and chaos.

«Building a Colosseum out of containers, filling it with silly friends, blasting music, and beer flowing like at Oktoberfest — seems like a perfect recipe to me,» says Sigalot. And indeed, it is. Coppa Pizzeria is not just soccer. It’s dancing, cheering, costumes, rivers of beer, and a strong Dadaist spirit. Rules are applied randomly, the crowd storms the field, and anyone who is sober gets expelled. «Coppa Pizzeria promotes injustice,» declares the official manifesto.

Among the awards, the Narcissus Cup for the best uniform stands out, sparking drama every year worthy of an underground fashion week. The official sponsor? SGRAPPA, the spirit created by Cattelan, Dalla Mora, and Vezza. Official drink: Caffè Scorretto, of course. With the Naples edition now closed, Coppa Pizzeria is getting ready to land in Venice. And we can’t wait.
