Dutch artist Daantje Bons is the author of several photographic projects that ironically investigate the idea of femininity.

Her images do not show at all the anabolic patina pre-packaged by advertising stereotype. Silicone, vulgar lasciviousness, but also plastic elegance, French perfume refinement, eternal youth, sophistication, the archetype of the mother of the family, of the seductive woman, are left out and teased by a world of rawer and more everyday details, exaggerated and played with sarcasm.

Dirty panties and tight elastics. And then suggestions, allusions, provocations and pungent surrealism. Humor becomes a weapon capable of breaking down the rigid limits of cultural heritage and media imagery.

Daantje thus questions the boundary between femininity and its staging, showing with a raw and unsheathed laugh what “should” remain secret.
