Erica Portunato, between photography and dance

-
Giorgia Massari

For the photographer and dancer Erica Portunato – alias Clementina – there are no limits between body, image and colour. Her artistic practice is a delicate encounter between her two vocations, photography and dance, two languages that allow Portunato to express what she calls ‘metamorphoses’. In her shots, it is the women’s bodies that speak. Sometimes alone, sometimes gathered in groups, but always with plastic poses and choreographic suggestions.

The static bodies, shot in mannequin mode, are set in urban and natural frames. The settings are as if absorbed by the chromatic power of the coloured tights and the compositional stasis of the rigid bodies. The apparently dynamic choreography is frozen in a moment, crystallising movement in time. The immobility and the strong contrasts of light give a metaphysical charm to the images that appear alienating, pushing the spectator to go beyond the mere aesthetic representation but rather seeking a more intimate meaning. The bodies, although immobile, dance and tangle with each other in a dreamlike state, seeking cohesion and, at the same time, individualism.
