Each artist has a different objective, Hirotoshi Ito‘s is to make his audience smile just like he makes smile the stones he works with. You have understood well, the Japanese artist is known for his sculptures that play with the perception of the viewer.

In the morning Hirotoshi gets up, goes to collect the rocks, more or less large, in a small river near his house and then gets to work, carving them with surgical precision and a very special sense of humor.

Some stones seem to be cut with a knife, as if they were a loaf of bread, others are opened with a zipper, revealing what they hide inside them, others, even the most disconcerting, reveal a macabre smile. 

What Hirotoshi Ito manages to do is to give the feeling that a material as hard as rock can be malleable at will, looking at his sculptures we want to take them in hand and crush them as if they were made of pongo.
