Is there a way to feel someone close? To appease physical shortcomings and shorten distances? When the pandemic forced the world’s entire population to stay cooped up in their homes, far from their affections and deprived of the human warmth of a hug or the joy of a glance, we all experienced what lack and loneliness means. Every day, regardless of the health emergency, billions of people feel this way because of a loss or a person far away. Filling the void becomes an arduous and difficult task, forcing one to face one’s own ghosts, fears and frailties. Russian photographer Karman Verdi interprets this condition and translates it into images through his project “There are so many ghosts at my spot” The photographic series, created from 2020, consists of a multitude of shots of the photographer himself in the home, caught in domestic scenes (while eating, ironing, brushing his teeth, sitting on the bed) all carried out in solitude. The sadness and melancholy of the scenes are emphasized by the presence of another person, often a woman, whose image is projected in the room, next to him and superimposed on the image taken directly by Karman. The photographs used by Karman Verdi are taken by ordinary people, under the explicit request of the photographer himself, who gives precise directions on how and where to take them. The result is that of a true online performance, a kind of participatory work, which allows for connections to be made, albeit fictitious and not tangible. Somehow, however, tangibility is touched upon, albeit remaining in an illusory dimension. Karman interacts with the subjects: he eats dinner with a woman, ties her dress, they sleep in the same bed… emphasizing, on the one hand, how a video call is able to temporarily bridge these gaps but, on the other hand, making explicit the impossibility of touching each other, amplifying the distances and accentuating the pain.
