What Is No Longer Here and What Will Eventually Disappear

Riturné, in the Piedmontese dialect, refers to the attempt to preserve and sustain a living connection with a past that is slowly becoming history. It is also the title of Mauro Curti’s photographic project, which speaks precisely about this: freezing small fragments before they melt away and disappear. “With Riturné, I confront the idea of returning home, feeling the need to establish a new connection with my homeland after several years spent abroad,” explains the photographer.

In Curti’s images, the relationship between humans and land is observed almost under a microscope—along with personal conflicts and the search for an identity tied to the concepts of family and belonging. Something that concerns all of us. For the photographer, this is a deeply personal project that speaks about his origins, the place where he grew up—Bene Vagienna, in the province of Cuneo—and its people.

Rurality in Mauro Curti’s Photography

The turning point in Curti’s photographic journey is therefore closely intertwined with rurality. “Everyday, ordinary life within a creative process shaped by being outdoors and exploring the surrounding environment, without any kind of geopolitical boundary”—this is how the photographer describes both his approach to and his practice of photography.

Ultimately, Riturné brings us closer to a distinctly rural atmosphere that reconnects us with the idea of land and with a sense of everyday life outside the metropolitan concept as we know it. The delicacy and precision of the photographs in this series spark our curiosity and draw us nearer to something that seems to be disappearing faster and faster.
