The ashtray is back

Anna Frattini

The ashtray is an object that – over time – Italian design has decided to leave behind. The third drop of WEED’D takes on the task of making this smoking accessory something more interesting. After all, the mission of the brand launched by Stefano Aschieri remains to propose smoking design objects designed and produced in Italy under the creative direction of Simone Bonanni. Today we return to talk about it on the occasion of the brand’s third drop: two ceramic ashtrays in different colors – always fun.

«The idea is to give new shine to these objects and bring them back into vogue in the realm of Design with a capital D. In the ‘60s and ’70s, in fact, companies like Danese, Alessi, Olivetti offered them designed by big names like Bruno Munari, Ettore Sottsass, Achille Castiglioni, Frattini to name just a few, while lately most companies have decided to remove these objects from their catalogs, probably because they are associated with unhealthy habits,» Stefano Aschieri explains, talking about this third drop of WEED’D.

The designs conceived by Simone Bonanni imagine smoking objects in a different, more free and fun key, sometimes even pop, which makes it clear the intention to bring to Italy a design that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Smoking accessories thus become true creations, made possible by careful research in the design phase. Those of WEED’D are therefore unique pieces in their kind, ready to be displayed at home as small works of art.

The third drop of WEED’D will be presented at the graphic design studio Ten Thousand Feet in via Filippino Lippi, 10 in Milan. Right in this location, Hard Times, High times will be held, a pop-up shop that will last from April 18th to 20th, and will be open from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. In addition to the new ashtrays, all other items in the WEED’D range will also be on display and for sale.
