Yorgos Lanthimos doubles down at the Super Bowl

As every year, the possible topics surrounding Super Bowl LX, which took place last night at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, and saw the Seattle Seahawks defeat the New England Patriots, are endless. From the highly anticipated halftime show with Bad Bunny to Trump’s comments, from Lady Gaga’s appearance on stage to the presence in the stands of the couple of the moment (Kim Kardashian and Lewis Hamilton) right through to the flood of trailers announcing the films we’ll be seeing in the coming months and a series of hilarious commercials.
It is precisely these latter that we want to focus on, but not with the usual endless list or a ranking for its own sake. In the sea of commercials, famous faces, and giant brands, there is one name we saw twice and whose signature we immediately recognized: Yorgos Lanthimos.

The Greek director who for over ten years has captivated audiences by creating surreal, magnetic, and disturbing stories has directed not one, but two commercials.

On one side we have The Feest for Grubhub—a food delivery service—which takes us back to the halls of The Favourite, during a royal banquet. Bringing us back to the present day is George Clooney, dressed in a turtleneck sweater and blazer, reminding both the audience and the guests that, for the occasion, the delivery fees are covered by Grubhub.

On the other, Lanthimos takes us back to the beginning of Poor Things!. On a small island in the middle of the sea, inside a brutalist building, Emma Stone is desperate because someone has already claimed the online domain emmastone.com: through the Squarespace platform, she keeps trying to register it unsuccessfully, smashing a different computer each time. In this case, Lanthimos’s story does not end with a single commercial, but continues across two additional videos.

Perhaps while we were all in theaters watching Bugonia, Yorgos was at home figuring out how to condense his entire world into just a few seconds.
